GALENA — George F. Lane, 88, of Galena passed away Saturday evening, May 8, 2010, surrounded by his family.
He was born Sept. 21, 1921, on the family farm in Condit to the late Fenton G. and Vinnie E. (Fisher) Lane. A graduate of Sunbury High School in 1939, he played on the football team and always enjoyed reminiscing at the class reunions. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving briefly during World War II.
George worked 44 years with Producers Livestock Association. A career which began in the Columbus stock yards, he then spent 25 years as manager of the Mount Vernon stockyards. He was transferred to the Columbus corporate office in 1966 as manager of the hog sales department and director of operations, retiring in 1988. His success was shown by the loyalty of numerous treasured friendships in the farming community.
A member of Condit Presbyterian Church, he prided himself in his homestead. He enjoyed gardening; flowers and vegetables, as well as manicuring his landscape and lawn.
He is survived by a son, Don (Lisa) Lane of Cincinnati; daughter, Susan (Brian) Howlett of Hacienda Heights, Calif.; four grandchildren, Lawrence and Michael (Juliet) Howlett, Brian and Douglas Lane (fiancée Laura Maynard); sister-in-law, Virginia Ihle of Sunbury; dear friend, Leda Walker; and a host of special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Erdene (Buck), in 1998; brother, Robert; and sister, Margaret Kletrovets.
Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Ohio 3 at Ohio 61, Sunbury, where a service celebrating the life of George Lane will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Trenton Cemetery.
