COLUMBUS — Jesse Paul “Jess” Manner, 77, passed away peacefully Wednesday afternoon, June 9, 2010, at the Kobacker House in Columbus, an in-patient Hospice facility.

Jess was born in Dixonville, Pa., on Aug. 16, 1932, to Richard Herbert and Blanche Iona (Cochrane) Manner. He is survived by his loving wife, Lynn; his children, John Henry Manner, Mathias Daniel (Jacqueline) Manner, Leslie Jayne (Christian Rine) Manner, Beverly Ann (Harold) Ferrell, Christopher Paul (Peg) Manner; stepson, Gene Erick (Erica) Howell; former son-in-law, Hamou Bouyakhf; beloved dog, Peanut; and beloved cat, Yessica. Also surviving are brothers, Eugene L. (Virginia) Manner and Frank D. (Gloria) Manner; half sister, Marcella Stephenson; aunt, Becky Salsgiver; several cousins; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers, Harry R. (Sue) Manner and Richard A. Manner.

Jess worked for many years in the oil and gas industry, including serving as a petroleum engineer for Haddad & Brooks in Gnadenhutten, Ohio. In 1994, he retired from Ward/Kraft in Fredericktown. Jess was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a tank mechanic in the 369th Ordnance Company, Fort Bragg, from 1953-55.

Jess loved his family, animals, music and books. Over the years he enjoyed photography, drawing and painting, woodworking, watching baseball and football and working on cars. He was a true “character,” who always had a ready smile and a tease for his favorite people. He was also known for his beautiful blue eyes, which he passed on to all his children, and his skill at dancing the two-step to songs such as “Pop-A-Top.”

At his request, there will be no funeral service. Family and friends are welcome at calling hours at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, on Sunday, June 12, from 2 to 5 p.m. Some of his favorite music will be played.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating in Jess’ memory to an animal care charity of donor’s choice or donating to the good work of the Kobacker House, 3595 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, OH 43214.
