MOUNT VERNON — Robert Elliott “Bob” McGinnis, 84, of Mount Vernon died June 15, 2010, at the Knox Community Hospital.
He was born Oct. 19, 1925, in Scio, Ohio, to the late Willis E. and Martha (Leggett) McGinnis. He was valedictorian of the 1943 graduating class of Scio High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and served during World War II. He graduated with honors from Ohio State University with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering. He also was a graduate of Harvard University Business School 1st P.M.D. Class. He retired from PPG Industries of Pittsburgh as chief engineer of the chemical division after 34 years, having worked at the Barberton Plant and Natrium Plant in West Virginia. He was a life member of the Ohio State University Alumni Club, The Harvard University Business School, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma X I and the Scio American Legion Post 482.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Wilma McGinnis Day and Glenora McGinnis Mull.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Janet (Laughlin) McGinnis; a brother, Thomas (Marge) McGinnis of Wellington; brother-in-law, John R. Laughlin of Jewett; special nieces, Linda Laughlin of Scio and Debra Love of Nova; also many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
There will be no calling hours by his wishes. The family will observe a private burial in St. John’s Cemetery in Mount Vernon with Major Robert Bender officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council. The Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home in Mount Vernon is handling the funeral arrangements for the McGinnis family.
