MOUNT VERNON — Norman W. Schaefer, 86, of Mount Vernon died Friday, June 18, 2010, at The Laurels of Mount Vernon.

Norman was born Feb. 29, 1924, in Pomeroy to Norman E. Schaefer and Edna (Stahl) Schaefer. He served with the U.S. Army Calvary during World War II. He was a retired machinist, having been employed at Pittsburgh Plate Glass Industries and Continental Can Co., both in Mount Vernon. Norman was a Methodist by faith and was a member of Thrall Lodge 170 Free and Accepted Masons in Fredericktown, Ann Hill Chapter Order of Eastern Star in Fredericktown, and the Dan Stone Post of the American Legion in Mount Vernon. Norman loved the outdoors and enjoyed his hobby of coin collecting.

Surviving are his wife, Leora R. (Robinson) Schaefer, whom he married March 20, 1959; his son, N. David Schaefer of Mansfield; his sister, Fern Dora Story of Pomeroy; his nephew, John Vern Story of Pomeroy; and his feline companion, Charlie.

Besides his parents, Norman was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Perry.

There will be no calling hours. Private graveside funeral services will be held at Mound View Cemetery in Mount Vernon.
