MOUNT VERNON — Dorothy J. Calkins, 88, of Mount Vernon died Sunday, July 4, 2010, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home in Mount Vernon.

Dorothy was born Oct. 28, 1921, in Mount Vernon to William E. and Mary C. (Totman) Ackerman and had spent her lifetime in the Mount Vernon area. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Vernon and had served as a volunteer for the Knox County Chapter of the American Red Cross for 16 years.

Surviving are her daughters, Marilyn J. (Bruce) Hite of Mount Vernon, Marcia L. (John) Ashcraft of Fredericktown and Barbara J. (David) Taylor of Bellville; five grandchildren, Andrew W. (Sandra) Hite, Michael P. Ashcraft, Richard A. Ashcraft, Kevin G. Maxwell and Jennifer N. Maxwell; two stepgrandchildren, Mandy (Luke) Magee and Eric Taylor; seven great-grandchildren, Brian, Matthew, Alisha, Abby and Katie Hite, Izadora Maxwell, and Johnathon Ashcraft; her sisters, Helen Lanning of Mount Vernon and Shirley Ross of Bellville.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl E. Calkins, in 2007; a grandson, Alan S. Hite, in 2003; and three brothers, Charles Ackerman, Kenneth “Buzz” Ackerman and Walter “Squint” Ackerman.

Friends may call Friday, July 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, where funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. A private burial will follow at Saint Johns Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Knox County, 17700 Coshocton Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050; or to the Ohio Eastern Star Home, 1451 Gambier Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050.
