BLADENSBURG — Edna Mae (Coakley) VanWinkle, 81, of Bladensburg passed away Saturday evening, July 10, 2010, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home in Mount Vernon.

She was born April 19, 1929, in Jersey, Ohio, to Mary A. (Hite) and William H. Coakley. She spent most of her life in the Bladensburg area and graduated from Bladensburg High School and Mount Vernon Business College, and retired from East Knox Schools in 1989. She was a member of the Bladensburg Presbyterian Church for 64 years before it closed in 2006. Edna enjoyed quilting, gardening, and baking for her family.

She is survived by her children, Margaret Sue (Bill) Mattinson of South Charleston, Ohio, Martha Lou (Norman) Baker of Fredericktown, Marilyn Kay (James) Gump of Mount Vernon, Thomas Hugh (Dottie) VanWinkle of Bladensburg and Sherry Ellen (Charles) Beatty of Walhonding; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; 15 stepgreat-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Jewell of Utica; a brother-in-law, Owen VanWinkle of Battle Creek, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Verda VanWinkle of Mount Vernon; her special “Kidd,” Kathy Broceus; and many nieces and nephews and their friends who all lovingly called her “Aunt Edna.”

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lake VanWinkle. They were married almost 56 years and he died in 2005. Also two brothers, Robert and William, one sister, Rose Mary Kidd, and two grandchildren, Amy Gump and Michael Farmer, preceded Edna in death.

Calling hours will be observed on Wednesday, July 14, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, where the funeral will be Thursday, July 15, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in the Bladensburg Cemetery.
