MOUNT VERNON — John C. Konkler, 85, of O’Brien Road, Mount Vernon, passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.

He was born Aug. 24, 1924, in Lancaster, Ohio, to the late Edmund and Clara (Fox) Konkler. John served in the U.S. Marines Corps and fought in the Battle of Guam. He received his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University. From 1951 to 1985, John worked for Cooper Energy Services ,and in 1985, he started with Ariel Corp. until his recent retirement. In his free time, John enjoyed making guns and hunting.

He was a lifetime member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, National Rifle Association and National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. John was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, where he served many years as an usher. He was also a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 847.

John is survived by three sons, David (Tammy) Konkler of Mount Vernon, Jeff (Cathy) Konkler of Granville and Edmund Konkler of Mount Vernon; two grandchildren, Matt Konkler and Julie Konkler; three brothers, the Rev. Paul Konkler of Vina, Calif., Richard Konkler of Trussville, Ala., Robert Konkler of Green Valley, Ariz.; and a sister, Rita (Ron) Zambo of Chiefland, Fla.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth “Ginny” (Brumter) Konkler; a sister, Gertrude Konkler; and a brother, Thomas Konkler.

Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, where a rosary will be said at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. His brother, the Rev. Paul Konkler will be celebrant. Burial, with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Mount Vernon.
