CENTERBURG — Opal J. Lawless, 89, of Centerburg passed away Saturday, July 17, 2010, surrounded by her family at Heartland of Centerburg.
She was born April 24, 1921, in Greenville, S.C., to the late Joseph J. and Martha J. (Ellison) Sparks. She moved to Centerburg in 1974 from Russell Springs, Ky., and had worked in the textile mills of Greenville, S.C.. Opal retired from the Salyer’s Nursing Home, now Heartland of Centerburg, where she worked in the laundry department and as a cook.
A member of the First Baptist Church of Russell Spring’s, Ky., she enjoyed crocheting, flower gardening, and collecting owls and hummingbirds. A wonderful cook, her table was always open and she was known for her southern cooking and homemade biscuits. Known as a “People Person,” she dearly loved her husband, children and grandchildren.
Beginning as a World War II romance, she married Roy Lawless, who was her husband and the love of her life for 28 years; he preceded her in death on Sept. 30, 1973. Two brothers, five sisters and a great-grandson also preceded her in death.
She is survived by children, David (Lillian) Lawless of Mount Vernon, Nancy Lawless, Becky (Donnie) Ramey, Phil (Linda) Lawless, all of Centerburg, Larry (Janette) Lawless of Howard, Jean (Roger) McConnell of Mount Vernon; adopted daughter, Ella Mae (John) Rainey of Greenville, S.C.; 14 grandchildren, Jeff, April, Nathan, Jason (Faith), Kelley (John), Traci (Rob), Gretchen, Travis (Sheena), Kendra, Casey (Mandy), Jordan (Kendra), Faith, Nickolas, Trisha; numerous great-grandchildren; and brother, the Rev. Earnest (Ethel) Sparks of Beach Island, S.C.
Friends may call today from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Ohio 3 at Ohio 61, Sunbury, where service will follow at 7:30 p.m. Graveside funeral service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Russell Springs Cemetery in Russell Springs, Ky.
