MOUNT VERNON — Wendell A. Van Houten, 86, of Vernedale Drive, Mount Vernon, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at the Emeritus at HillenVale.

He was born April 12, 1924, in Morrow County, Ohio, to the late Gerald and Olive (Bostwick) Van Houten. Wendell was an electrician and was employed at Dalrymple Electric. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) for over 60 years, the VFW, the Fraternal Order of the Moose, the AMVETS; and attended the Faith Baptist Church. Wendell was a veteran serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He is survived by three sons, Ronald (Linda) Van Houten of Grand Junction, Colo., Terry (Diana) Van Houten of Howard, Randall Van Houten of Mount Vernon; two grandchildren, Angie (Jason) Starr and Salena (David) Cathcart; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Wendell was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Margaret (Twigg) Van Houten; a brother, Harold Van Houten; a grandson, Craig Van Houten; and an infant daughter, Phyllis Jane Van Houten.

Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home. A service will be held Monday beginning at 11 a.m., with Pastor Bob Veenhuis officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council, will follow in Mound View Cemetery.
