MOUNT VERNON — Rollo E. “Waddy” Poland, 79, of Mount Vernon passed away at his residence Aug. 3, 2010, surrounded by his family.
Waddy was born Sept. 25, 1930, in Mount Vernon and was the son to the late Louis B. and Mildred (Ryan) Poland.
He was the former owner of Brinning’s News/Vine Deli, Waddy’s Kasual Korner, The Gallery, and also managed Worley’s and Gene’s Clothing Store. He was an Army veteran who served his country during the Korean War. His hobbies included watching his kids and grandkids play various sports, yard work, fishing and golfing at Irish Hills Golf Course. He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), VFW Post 4027, former member of Chamber of Commerce, Elks Lodge, Colonial City Moose Lodge, Mount Vernon Country Club, Downtown Merchants Association and the Exchange Club.
Waddy is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mildred (Hiles) Poland; his daughter and son-in-law, Kris (Paul) Caldwell of Fredericktown; a son and daughter-in-law, Stuart (Jeanne) Poland of Mount Vernon; brother, Ron (Margaret) Poland of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Kami Weikel, Kodi Weikel, Trey Caldwell and Casey Poland; stepgrandchildren, Josh and Ben Corrigan, Yardley El-Khouri; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Darrel, Ben and Leo Poland.
Friends may call today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home, 212 N. Main St., Mount Vernon, where funeral services will be held Friday at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Jonathan Fettig officiating. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery with military graveside honors by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
