MOUNT VERNON — Harry W. Rine, 84, of Mount Vernon died Sunday afternoon, Aug. 22, 2010, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home in Mount Vernon.
He was born June 12, 1926, in Mount Vernon, son of the late Frank and Marion (Van Amen) Rine. Harry graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1944 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 and was stationed in Iceland for one year as a storekeeper. Harry married Beulah June Walters of Round Grove, Ill., in 1946 and in 1948 they moved to Mount Vernon. He worked for Liquid Carbonic Corp. in Morrison, Ill., and then Pittsburgh Plate and Glass in Mount Vernon. Harry was a former state tax examiner and served for 24 years as the Knox County recorder until retirement. Over the years, Harry was involved with many organizations, the Mount Vernon Little League Baseball; The Salvation Army; the Mental Health Association; life member of the American Legion, and VFW, the Elks, Eagles and Moose lodges; the Mount Vernon Exchange Club; Kiwanis; the Knox County Agriculture Society and Fair Board; and he was a member of the AARP. Harry was also a member of the Masonic Lodge 9 in Mount Vernon, the Eastern Star in Bladensburg, the Scottish Rite, Aladdin Shrine, the Baldwin Shrine Club, he was a 33 Degree Mason, and a member of the Kinsman and Royal Arch in Mount Vernon. Harry enjoyed working with the Shrine Circus and helping with the Mount Vernon High School football and basketball games.
In 1988, Harry and Beulah retired to Arizona and after the death of his wife, Beulah, in 2008, Harry moved back to Mount Vernon to reside at the Ohio Eastern Star Home.
Harry is survived by his son, H. Michael (Shelley) Rine of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughters, Meredith (Carl Leon) Tiller of Mount Vernon and Rebecca (Larry) Summerfield of Bowling Green, Ky.; grandchildren, Kelly Tiller, Michelle (Kenny) Romans, Amy Meadows, Ginger (Joe) DiCoio and Joshua Rine; great grandchildren, Allison and Karlie Meadows, Brandon Adkins, Zachary and Vinny DiCoio; and a sister, Vora Williams of Mesa, Ariz.
In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah June Rine; a daughter, Cynthia Rine; brothers, Frank, James, Paul and Gordon Rine; and granddaughters, Saundra Marquez, Toby and Brianna Rine.
The family will have a graveside service Thursday, Aug. 26, at 10:30 a.m. in Mound View Cemetery with Pastor Sam Troyer officiating, along with Masonic and Eastern Star Services. The Knox County Joint Veterans Council will provide military honors.
