MILLERSBURG — Mary Jane Smail, 99, of Millersburg passed away, Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at Majora Lane Care Center, Millersburg, following an extended illness.
Funeral service will be Friday 2 p.m. at Union Grove Church of Christ, with Pastor Clifford Beck officiating. Burial will be at the Union Grove Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to service at the church.
Family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 525 N. Broad St., Canfield, OH 44406; or to the Union Grove Church of Christ, 2135 TR 2, Killbuck, OH 44637.
Arrangements are being handled by Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg, Ohio.
She was born Dec. 28, 1910, near Killbuck, Ohio, and was the daughter of Valentine “Doc” and Odessa “Pearl” (Purdy) Mellor. On May 13, 1934, she married Andrew Norris Smail and he preceded her in death in May 1997.
Mary Jane lived in Holmes County her whole life and was raised near Union Grove Church, where she and other family members helped with the custodial work. She was a nurse’s aid at Lakeview Haven in Knox County for a time. She was a member of the Union Grove Church of Christ, the Grange and was a 4-H Advisor. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, weaving rugs on her own loom and genealogy.
She is survived by three daughters, Nola Edgar of Stevensville, Mont., Linda O’Donnell of Millersburg and Kathleen Reynolds of Salt Lake City, Utah; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Birdell Addlesperger of Lexington, Ohio, and Odessa Ferris of Nashville, Ohio; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Carl (Marjorie) Mellor.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Esther Hardin; five brothers, Wallace, Bruce, Russell, Carl and Bernard; four sisters, Beatrice Mellor, Jessie Davidson, Dorothy Almond and Nellie Williard; and four sons-in-law, Robert Edgar, Marvin “Jim” Hardin, Paul O’Donnell and Gordon Reynolds.
