MILFORD — Forest “Ray” Burch died Aug. 9, 2010, at his home in Milford, Ohio, surrounded by his family.

He was born Dec. 8, 1921, in Gambier to George and Viletta (Mills) Burch. He was raised by his stepmother, Pearl (Hammil) Burch along with his five brothers, William Fred, Paul, Harold “Babe,” and Dale, who preceded him in death. He has one surviving sister, Nancy Chalker of Bath, N.C.

His first wife, Anna Lois (Ray) of Sabina, Ohio, and mother of his four surviving children, preceded him in death on May 5, 1992.

He is survived by his second wife, Dorothy (Chase) of Milford, Ohio. His surviving children include, daughter, Glenna Burch of Mount Dora, Fla., son, Brigadier Gen. Melvin Burch and wife, Abbie, of Tornado, W.Va.; grandchildren, Jeff, Nathan and wife, Lisa, Trinity and husband, Dustin, Resler; daughter, Marilyn Burch of Monroe Township, N.J.; daughter, Melba (Swagler) and husband, Paul, of Micro, N.C., and two stepgrandchildren, Michele and Jennifer; stepdaughter, Pamela Poe and husband, Dewain, of Milford, Ohio, and two step grandchildren, Meghan Hoeflich and Erin Vinson, stepson, Bart Hotel and Susan Kingley of Milford, Ohio.

Local surviving nephews and nieces, Jim Burch of Howard, Caryl Epple of Fort Wayne, Ind., Jennie Newton of Columbus, Gary Burch of Bellville, Nancy Peugh of Mount Vernon, Betsy Hauser of S. Australia, Howard Chalker of Maryland and Kenneth Burch of Mississippi.

He was a veteran of World War II in the Western Pacific Theater and received a Field Commission as a second lieutenant on Peileilu on Aug. 1, 1945. He was a Boy Scout leader, avid outdoorsman and loved sailing, biking and kayaking. “May you always have clear skies and fair winds.” We celebrate his life and will miss him dearly.
