MARBLE FALLS, Texas — Ruth (Shipley) Engel, 81, died today, Sept. 3, 2010, at St. David Hospice in Austin, Texas, after short illness with cancer.
She was born Jan. 11, 1929, to Lester and Trella (McNutt) Shipley in Mount Vernon. She was a 1946 graduate of Fredericktown High School and 1951 graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in art education.
After teaching for a year, she joined Army Special Services directing spare-time activities for soldiers. She was assigned to Japan, and then Korea, when she met Army Capt. David Engel. They were married in November 1960.
When he retired from the Army, they settled in Rome, N.Y., where she taught art at Ariskney High School for 35 years. They retired and built a new home in Marble Falls, Texas. Ruth did volunteer work over several years with the Burnet County Library System, where she was a board member.
She served as a lay representative on the Central Texas Library System for multiple terms where, as an amateur photographer, she recorded many of the library’s milestones. She was an active member of the Preceptor Xi Kappa Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.
She is survived by a brother, Virgil Shipley of Mount Vernon; a niece, Phyllis (Gavin) Meeks, grandniece, Kaleigh Meeks, and grandnephew, Garrett Meeks, all of Westerville. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, David, in 2002.
She donated her body to medical science. There will be no funeral.
