MOUNT VERNON — Joseph W. “Joe” Elder, 85, of Mount Vernon, formerly of Fredericktown, died Friday morning, Sept. 3, 2010, at Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.

He was born Aug. 10, 1925, in Parkersburg, W.Va., a son of the late Rymer and Maud (Mathers) Elder. Joe had worked for Weyerhauser in Mount Vernon and retired from General Motors in Ontario, Ohio, with 27 years of faithful service. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving in Germany. Joe was also a member of the Fredericktown Church of Christ and the VFW in Lexington.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary E. (Smith) Elder, whom he married on Feb. 16, 1945; sons, Jack and wife, Linda (McCullough) Elder of Lenoir City, Tenn., and Paul and wife, Sue (Davis) Elder of Howard; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandaughter; several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Jean Elder of Florida; and a special friend, Bette Elder.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert Elder; and several half brothers and half sisters.

The family will have a graveside service for Joe on Tuesday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m. at the Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Ohio Eastern Star Home, Activities Fund, 1451 Gambier Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050. Private condolences may be expressed to the family at
