MOUNT VERNON — Edwin T. Ayers, 92, of Mount Vernon passed away Sept. 7, 2010.
He was born Jan. 22, 1918, in Gambier to Harold Ayers and Burdette Colwill Ayers Williams.
Ed was a member of the Gay Street United Methodist Church, a member of Mount Zion Lodge 9 F&AM, was a member and four-time past worthy patron of Knox Chapter 236 Order of Eastern Star, member Valley of Columbus Consistory, Aladdin Shrine Temple and Baldwin Shrine Club. Ed served his country in the Army in the Philippines during World War II and was a member of the Dan C. Stone Jr. Post of the American Legion, AMVETS and VFW.
Throughout his professional life, Ed was a salesperson in Knox County and surrounding area for Pepsi-Cola, the Grennan Cake Co., the Keebler Co., and retired from the Bissman Grocery House in Mansfield. Ed also transported veterans for the Veterans Administration and retired after 10 years of service.
He is survived by his daughter, Carlena Hesters (Barbara) of Tennessee; a son, Edwin Ayers (Bill) of Columbus; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Patricia Beck of Utica; nieces and nephews, Dorothy and Jim Pickering of Bellevue; and his caregiver, Mrs. Betty Page.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 68 years, Frances (Ferry); a grandson, Charles Paul Ayers; and stepbrothers, Richard and Jack Williams.
Friends may call today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, where Mount Zion Lodge will conduct memorial services today at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Denise Marikis officiating. The Knox County Joint Veterans Council will conduct military honors at the funeral home following the funeral service. Private burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Gambier.
