MOUNT VERNON — Wayne Frederick Barber, 72, of Mount Vernon, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, at the Ohio Eastern Star Home in Mount Vernon following a courageous battle with lung disease.

Wayne was born June 9, 1938, in Mount Vernon a twin son of Ralph Barber and Gladys (Smith) Yeater Barber. He was a graduate of Fredericktown High School, served with the U.S. Army Reserves and had been employed as a sheet metal worker at Owens Corning Corp. in Newark.

Wayne was a member of the Central Christian Church in Mount Vernon and was a former member of the Mulberry Street United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon. He was an active member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge in Gambier and DOKK 34.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Ellen (Hiles) Barber, whom he married June 8, 2003; a son, John W. (Terri) Barber of Utica; twin brother, Duane (Clare) Barber of Newark; a sister, Helena Alberts of Howard; half brothers, Charles Yeater of Millersburg and Rodney Barber; stepbrother, Glenn Leib of Florida; half sister, Sherry Frisby of Idaho; and stepsister, Ida Marie Leib of Cleveland.

Besides his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Barber; a stillborn daughter; a brother, Virgil Barber; and half brothers, Bill Yeater and John Yeater.

Friends may call Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, where a funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Mr. Ken Springer will be officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
