MOUNT VERNON — Dr. Donald V. Walz, 87, of Mount Vernon and Friendship Village of Dublin, passed away Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010.

Dr. Walz was born on Dec. 24, 1922, in Le Mars, Iowa, to Joseph F. Walz and Viola C. (Sieverding) Walz. Dr. Walz retired from Knox Community Hospital in Mount Vernon after serving as laboratory director and pathologist for 26 years. He received his M.D. from the University of Iowa with postgraduate training at Cleveland City Hospital and the Iowa City VA Medical Center. Dr. Walz was a member of the American Medical Association, Alpha Omega Alpha, and the Ohio Medical Association and was a contributor to professional publications including the Journal of the American Medical Association and the Ohio State Medical Journal.

Dr. Walz served as president of the Knox County Medical Society; executive board member of Mercy Hospital and Knox Community Hospital; president and board member of the Ohio Association of Blood Banks; Knox County chairman of the Red Cross Blood Program; and chairman and executive board member of the Columbus Regional Red Cross Blood Program.

Dr. Walz was a veteran of the U.S. Army (World War II) and the U.S. Air Force (Korean War). He retired from the Air Force Reserve in 1961 with the rank of major. He was actively involved with American Legion Post 136 in Mount Vernon and was a member of Rotary.

Dr. Walz is survived by his children, Stephen and Martha (Walz) Hewitt of Columbus, Philip and Susan (Walz) Kafoure of Westerville, Steven Walz and Mary Anne Creamer of Charlotte, N.C., and Chong and Elizabeth (Walz) Chin of Upper Arlington; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Winifred Walz.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Rodric J. DiPietro on Monday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. at St. Brendan the Navigator Church, 4475 Dublin Road, Hilliard, OH 43206.

Dr. Walz has donated his body to The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
