MOUNT VERNON — Ray A. Pruett, 83, of Mount Vernon, died Friday, Oct. 15, 2010, at Knox Community Hospital.

Ray was born Aug. 23, 1927, in Bandy, Va., to Edward and Polly (Baldwin) Pruett and had lived in the Centerburg, Sparta and Mount Vernon areas most of his lifetime. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and retired from Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. in Mount Vernon after 33 years of employment.

Surviving are those he raised as his children, Michael (Brenda) Pruett of Mount Gilead, Polly (Dave) Spangler of Leesburg, Fla., and Mildred Brammer of Amherst; seven grandchildren; and his sisters, Clara Pruett and Ruth Hall, both of Mount Vernon.

Besides his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie (Vance) Pruett; brothers Frank, Ed, Fred and Rollie; and sisters, Vie Graham, Fern Barrett, Fae Whitt, Dolores Pruett and Mary Pickens.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon. Burial with military honors by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour before the funeral service.
