MOUNT VERNON — Norman J. Purta, 83, of Mount Vernon, passed away Oct. 15, 2010, at Knox Community Hospital.

He was born Feb. 21, 1927, in Michigan City, Ind., to the late Louis and Loretta (Beth) Purta. Norman was a U.S. Army and Navy veteran and a member of the First Baptist Church. He had been a member of the Mount Vernon community for over 10 years.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janetta R. (Ragland) Purta; two daughters, Loretta (Tad) Rearick III of Mount Vernon and Marietta “Liz” (Ken) Schroder of Fremont, Calif.; four grandchildren; one brother; and one sister.

Calling hours will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, where funeral services will he held Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Russell Downs officiating. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
