LAKELAND, Fla. — Donald C. Ferris, 71, formerly of Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully in the company of his loving family Oct. 6, 2010, from a short battle with cancer.
He was born Aug. 17, 1939, in Mount Vernon, Ohio, to Pearl Stevens Ferris and Edna (Jason) Ferris. He served in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed flying with his buddy Frank Baker. He loved playing and watching golf. He loved his Buccaneers and Florida Gators. He was a member of the AMVETS Post 32, American Legion Post 4, and Charter Member of the Eagles, all in Lakeland. He retired in October 2009 after 30 years as parking garage attendant for the city of Lakeland. He was a Methodist.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dallas “Dick” Ferris; sisters, Beatrice Ulrey, Irma Valentine and Evelyn Perrine.
He is survived by fiancée, Christa Howerton; daughter, Terry Vaughan; brother, Robert (Barbara) Ferris, all of Lakeland; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; former wife and friend, Edythe Walker Ferris of Lakeland; nieces, Linda (Herb) Phillips, Mount Gilead, Cathy Woods and Debbie (Doug) Smith, Howard; as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Calling hours will be Friday, Oct. 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Newark Road Church of Christ. Graveside service will be held Saturday, Oct. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at Mound View Cemetery. Pastor Andrew Jooste will be officiating. A luncheon will be held at the church at 12:30 p.m.
