MOUNT VERNON — Thomas A. Gardner Sr., 82, of Mount Vernon, died Monday morning, Nov. 1, 2010, near Amity.
He was born March 24, 1928, in Mount Vernon, son of the late Thomas and Cecil (Taylor) Gardner. Tom retired from the Mount Vernon Developmental Center with 30 years of faithful service. He was a decorated veteran of World War II and a boxing champion during his military service. Tom enjoyed hunting and fishing and he also trained and hunted champion coon dogs. He was a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church and the American Legion in Mount Vernon.
Tom is survived by his son, Thomas A. Gardner Jr.; daughters, Linda Gardner, Karen (Robert) Betancourt and Laura (Gary) Wedemyer; sister, Carole (Tony) Cuellar; grandchild, Amy Betancourt; great-grandchildren, Deakyn and Jude Patterson; and stepdaughters, Cheryl (John) Ewalt, Lori (Jack) Furgerson, Gwen (Rick) Gibson and Holly Rainey; and his stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren; his faithful dog, Molly; and extended family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by a son, Richard Gardner; a sister, Roberta Edger; and his wife, Gladys Gardner.
The family will have a private memorial service at a later date.
