FREDERICKTOWN — Velma S. Simmons, 84, of Fredericktown, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, at her residence.
Velma was born April 8, 1926, in Morrow County to Huston and Maggie (Gadd) Williams and had spent her lifetime in Morrow and Knox counties. Velma and her husband, Cecil, owned and operated school buses for the Fredericktown School System, as well as maintained the family farm where she helped in the fields and barns. She was also a devoted housewife and mother to their five children. Velma also had worked for several local factories.
Velma was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church near Fredericktown, the Ann Hill Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, in Fredericktown and a 50-year member of Wayne Grange.
Surviving are her daughters, Jean (Lowell) Baxter, Kim (Roger) Dixon and Roxanna Morrison, all of Fredericktown; sons, Gerald (Sandy) Simmons of Coshocton and Gordon (Shirley) Simmons of Fredericktown; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Mary Kathryn (Forrest) Leaman of Florida; and brothers, Hobert Williams of Mount Gilead and Herman Williams of Bainbridge.
Besides her parents Velma was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Cecil Simmons; and sisters, Violet McDonald and Vivian Myers.
Friends may call Sunday, Nov. 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, 33 E. College St., Fredericktown, where Ann Hill Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, will conduct memorial services following the calling hours. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home Monday, Nov. 29, at 11 a.m. with Joe Overholt officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown.
