MOUNT VERNON — Betty J. VanHouten, 66, of Mount Vernon, died Saturday morning, Nov. 27, 2010, at Whispering Hills Care Center in Mount Vernon.
She was born June 24, 1944, in Mount Vernon, daughter of Goldie (Kent) Heagren Sparks of Marion and the late Robert Heagren. Betty was a cook at the Apple Spice Inn, and in her spare time she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was also a published author.
Betty is survived by her mother, Goldie; sons, John Snyder and Gerald Grubaugh Jr., of Fredericktown; daughters, Roberta Atkinson of Fredericktown, Quintina Snyder of Mount Vernon and Tina Powell of Marion; stepsons, Robin VanHouten and Bret VanHouten of Mount Vernon, Greg VanHouten of Fredericktown and Robert VanHouten of San Francisco, Calif.; stepdaughter, Debora O’Bryan of Delaware; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Rita Coffman of Florida; and a brother, William Egerland of Arkansas.
In addition to her father, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Robert VanHouten Sr.
The family will receive friends Thursday, Dec. 2, from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, 33 E. College St., Fredericktown, with Rev. Gerald Bell officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown.
