SUGAR GROVE — The Rev. John Barry Bentz died Friday, Dec. 24, 2010, in Columbus.

Rev. John Barry Bentz was born Dec. 23, 1938, in Newark to the late Francis and Jeannette (Barry) Bentz.

He is survived by siblings, Frank (Susan) Bentz and Mary Estelle Ehret, all of Newark, and Barbara (Charles) Sinsabaugh of Granville; and 13 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers-in-law, William Ehret and Philip DeVol.

Father Bentz attended St. Francis de Sales School and High School, Newark, and St. Charles College Seminary, receiving a B.A. in philosophy in 1961. He subsequently studied theology at Mount St. Mary of the West Seminary, Norwood, from which he graduated in 1966. He was ordained to the priesthood at St. Joseph Cathedral on May 28, 1966, by the Most Rev. John J. Carberry.

Father Bentz served as assistant pastor of St. Mary Church, Lancaster, with teaching responsibilities at Bishop Fenwick High School (1966-69) and temporary administrator of the parish (1969); assistant pastor of Holy Redeemer Church, Portsmouth, with teaching responsibilities at Notre Dame High School (1969-71); director of the Department of Religion of Newark Catholic High School (1971-73); assistant pastor of St. Nicholas Church, Zanesville (1973-74); chaplain for Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus, with residence at St. Timothy Church (1974-75) and Our Lady of Victory Church (1975-76). He served as pastor of Immaculate Conception Church, Dennison (1976-81); administrator of Sts. Augustine and Gabriel Church, Columbus (1981-83); administrator of St. Philip the Apostle Church, Columbus (1984-90); assistant pastor of St. Mary Church, Marion (1990-91); associate pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Church, Mount Vernon (1992-93); pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Marysville, with chaplaincy of Ohio Reformatory for Women (1993-2004); pastor of Sacred Hearts Church, Cardington (2000-08). He retired from active service in 2008, but continued to assist in several parishes, particularly in Fairfield County, St. Francis de Sales Church, Newark and Mount Carmel East Hospital, Columbus.

Father Bentz’s body will be received at St. Francis de Sales Church, 66 Granville Street, Newark, on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m., where friends may call until 4 p.m. and later that evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m., and Thursday, Dec. 30, from 10 a.m. until the funeral Mass, which will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Bishop Frederick F. Campbell will be the principal celebrant and offer the homily. Interment at St. Joseph Cemetery, Newark, will take place following the funeral Mass. A bereavement meal will be provided by the parish.
