MOUNT VERNON — Eleanor F. “Sis” Shire, 90, of East Gambier Street, Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, at the Autumn Health Care Center.

She was born Sept. 20, 1920, in Covington, Ky., to the late Ralph and Goldie (Parker) Hempfling. Eleanor spent time at The Station Break in Mount Vernon and was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in the 1040 General Hospital outside London, England, during World War II.

She is survived by her daughters, Billie (Paul Gideon) Shire of Gambier, Susan (Sanford) Siegel of Mount Vernon; her son, Michael Shire of Mount Vernon; and her sister, Phila Kibby of Florida.

Besides her parents, Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, William Shire.

The family will observe a private memorial service. The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home is honored to have been chosen to serve the family of Eleanor “Sis” Shire.
