LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill. — Joan Eloise McFeely Ekedahl, affectionately known as “Fi,” passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, in Lincolnshire, Ill.

Fi was born in Mount Vernon, Ohio, on June 8, 1929, to Paul and Miriam Mardis McFeely. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1947 and attended Oberlin College where she majored in home economics and played volleyball.

Fi enjoyed socializing and playing Bridge, Gin Rummy and Mahjong. She was a gracious hostess, a great cook and loved to entertain her many friends. She traveled extensively around the world from Ohio to Hong Kong, Japan and beyond. She liked to read mysteries and work on crossword puzzles. Fi loved to knit, sew and do needlework, which were usually gifts for children and grandchildren. She was fond of gardening and enjoyed flowers of all kinds.

Fi is survived by her sister, Jane Woodward of Hilliard, Ohio; her cousin, Dr. Perry (Louise) Trinkner of Mount Vernon, Ohio; her two daughters, Christine Cappellucci of Almont, Colo., and Margaret Holloway of Deerfield, Ill.; four grandchildren, Tyler Cappellucci and Jesse Cappellucci Ebner of Colorado, and Connor and Jesse Holloway of Deerfield, Ill.; and one great-grandchild, Warren David Ebner of Colorado. She was “Auntie Fi” to her many nieces and nephews who have said she was their favorite. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

A memorial service was held in Deerfield, Ill., on Jan. 12 at the home of her daughter, Peggy. She would have enjoyed knowing how many people came to say goodbye. Her family is planning a service in Mount Vernon, Ohio, this summer where she will be reunited with her daughter, Constance Ekedahl, who preceded her in death.

A graveside service will be held at a later date. The Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home is honored to have been chosen to serve the family of Joan “Fi” Eloise McFeely Ekedahl.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Macular Degeneration Foundation Inc., P.O. Box 531313, Henderson, NV 89053; www.eyesight.org/; or to the charity of one’s choice. To leave the family a condolence online visit www.snyderfuneralhomes.com.
