He was born March 18, 1932, in Mount Vernon to the late Wilbur and Blanche (Cutler) Rock. Herb graduated in 1950 from Mount Vernon High School. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force, as a security officer for the B-36 program during the Korean War. He served 43 months at the Loring “SAC” AFB in Limestone, Maine. He was extremely proud of his service to his country in this capacity.

A hero to our Heroes, Herb could always be spotted on the square encouraging families and former veterans to place a brick with their name inscribed in the “Walk of Honor.” Herb was a lifetime member of the AMVETS. He was always ready and willing to promote patriotism to his country including placing American flags on the Kokosing Gap Trail during Memorial Day and other special events.
Herb served as a volunteer on the Kokosing Gap Trail since day one. For over 20 years he could be seen trimming back bushes, cutting trees and cleaning up the trail many times during the week. He received an award for Volunteer of the Year in December 1999.
Herb loved Mount Vernon and was always ready to tell people about it. He spent hours and hours promoting Mount Vernon passing out hundreds of the Knox County brochures to out-of-town visitors enjoying the trail. Herb was an avid bike rider, jogger and golfer.
