MANSFIELD — Donald J. Drake, 83, of Mansfield, passed away Saturday evening, Jan. 29, 2011, in Emeritus at HillenVale Assisted Living Center in Mount Vernon.
Donald was born Oct. 3, 1927, in Dover, the son of Joseph and Gladys Drake. An Army veteran, Donald served during World War II. For over 20 years, Don worked as a machinist for Cooper-Bessmer and General Motors for 25 years.
Don did have an adventurous side. In his mid-30s he acquired his pilot’s license and purchased his own plane. In the summer months, Don was often boating or water skiing with family and friends on either Pleasant Hill Lake or the Muskingum River. He took full advantage of the Richland B&O Bike Trail. Don would ride his bicycle just about every day. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Mansfield.
Don is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Neil Thompson of Centerburg; his son, Stephen J. Drake of Honolulu, Hawaii; four grandchildren, Teresa Kuhn, Brian Thompson, Rebecca Drake and Michael Estrada; two great-grandchildren, Amanda Thompson and Michael Kuhn; a great-great-grandson, Treven Shurlock; and brother and sister-in-law David and Glenna Drake of Denver, Colo.
Along with his parents, Don was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty Mae Drake; and sister, Dorothea Dickenson.
The family will receive friends today, Monday, Jan. 31, from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. The Rev. Robert Stull will officiate.
