CENTERBURG — Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Thompson, age 78, of Centerburg, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011, at home.

She was born on Jan. 13, 1933, in Columbus to the late Hiram E. and Martha Bell (Wright) Wilson. A graduate of South High School, she married her high school sweetheart, Richard E. Thompson. Together they shared almost 50 wonderful years of marriage until his passing in 2002.

Until retirement, she worked as the secretary for the principal of the Centerburg High School. A woman of deep faith, she was very active with the Centerburg United Methodist Church, the church choir, and the Mount Vernon Players. She also had served as the Centerburg High School cheerleading advisor for seven years.

As one with many interests she was a collector of bears, angels and birdhouses. She was an avid gardener of both beautiful flowers and vegetables. She was known for her decorated cakes and sweetheart rolls, as well as her hand-crafted birthday and Christmas cards.

Always generous, she was an avid supporter of the Charity Newsies and enjoyed a good sense of humor. Kind and loving, she believed and advocated equality and fairness for all. She was well loved and respected by the Centerburg Community and will be remembered for her singing voice and picturesque cottage house, which was always thoughtfully decorated for each season.

She is survived by her children, Mindy (Kevin) Jones of Mount Vernon, Jay E. (Leslie) Thompson of Grapevine, Texas, Sally (Jamie) Deraleau of Maypearl, Texas; daughter-in-law, Janet Thompson of Centerburg; six grandchildren, Emily, Brian, Kevin, T.T., Christopher, Taylor; great-granddaughter, Alexis; brothers, William E. (Patricia) Wilson, Richard (Eilene) Wilson; sister, Saunnie Wilson; many nieces and nephews.

Also preceded in death by son, Tommy Thompson; and sister, Carol Ann Raber.

Calling hours were held at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home in Sunbury and memorial services celebrating her life were held on Jan. 29 at the Centerburg United Methodist Church, with Pastor Vicky Kelley officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in Eastview Cemetery.
