GAMBIER — Bertie E. Jones of Gambier, and formerly of Fredericktown and Millwood, passed away Feb. 2, 2011, at the Ohio Eastern Star Health Center.

She was born July 23, 1914, in her grandmother’s home in Ankneytown, Ohio, to parents Samuel and Lillian (Folk) Swihart. Bertie was a 1932 graduate of Fredericktown High School, and attended college and the Mount Vernon Business School.

Bertie spent many years farming with her husband, Harrison, whom she married in 1933; and her reputation for good cooking was well known to all the farm hands. After going to business school, Bertie went to work for what was at the time known as the Mount Vernon/Knox County Credit Bureau. In later years she went back to cooking at the Fredericktown Rest Home.

Bertie was a longtime member of the Ohio Eastern Stars; and loved to knit, play euchre or bingo; and cook for her family.

Bertie was preceded in death by her husband in 1975; by her sister, Keziah Indoe; and brothers, Charles G. Swihart and Oren Swihart.

Bertie is survived by two children, Pat (Mel) Partesius of Texas and Owen L. (Joan) Jones of Howard; five grandchildren, Deanna (Chris) Johnson of Gambier, Laurie (Ryan) Gallwitz of Howard, and Michelle (Jon) St. Clair, John (Lisa) Partesius and Jessica Fincher, all of Texas. There are 11 great grandchildren.

Services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m. at Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home, 212 N. Main St., Mount Vernon. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Private burial will be held in Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown.
