GAMBIER — George J. “Candy Man” Beckholt, 79, of Center Street, Gambier, passed away Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at Knox Community Hospital.

He was born Feb. 8, 1931, in Mount Vernon to the late George and Minnie Belle (Laymon) Beckholt. George was employed as a custodian at Kenyon College from which he retired after 25 years of service. He was a member of the Grove Church of Christ. George loved fishing, hunting and especially spending time with his family.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda Boggs of Mount Vernon; his son, Larry (Sandy) Beckholt of Mount Vernon; three grandchildren, Brian Boggs, Dawn Beltz and Heath Beckholt; four great-grandchildren, Andrew, Brianna, Garrett and Corey; and two brothers, Gene (Marilyn) Beckholt of Mount Vernon and Art (Wanetta) Beckholt of Mount Vernon.

Besides his parents, George was preceded in death by his wife, Martha (Wallace) Beckholt; his son-in-law, Robert Boggs; two brothers, Charles and Harold Beckholt; three sisters, Hazel Curtis, Dorothy Beatty and Bessie Rockwell; and also an infant brother and sister.

Friends may call Thursday, Feb. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held Friday beginning at 1 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Bell officiating.

Memorial contributions can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
