SUNBURY — John W. “Jay” Stemen, 89, of Sunbury, died suddenly Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at St. Ann’s Hospital, Westerville.
He was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Johnstown to the late Charles and Emma (Householder) Stemen. A sergeant and veteran of World War II, he retired from Columbia Gas. He was a volunteer fireman and former Sunbury village councilman.
Survivors are son, Ronnie Stemen and friend Janet Halsey; daughter, Alice Tozer; grandson, Micah Tozer; friend and companion, Alma Jones; nieces, Ellen Ruth (Gray) Steele, Carole Southworth Watson.
Preceded in death by wife, Ellen (Grove) Stemen, in 2002; three brothers; and three sisters.
Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., with Masonic services at 8 p.m., at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury, where services will be Friday at 11 a.m. with Pastor J.R. Smith officiating. Interment in Sunbury Memorial Park.
