MOUNT VERNON — Cecil W. Nelson, 93, of Mount Vernon, passed away Wednesday morning, Feb. 9, 2011, at Emeritus at HillenVale in Mount Vernon.
He was born Jan. 23, 1918, in Ludlow, Pa., a son of the late George W. and Hilda (Carlson) Nelson. Cecil retired from Cooper Industries in Mount Vernon and was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Gay Street United Methodist in Mount Vernon, where he was active in Varsity Sunday School Class and the Mount Zion Lodge 9 of the F&AM for over 50 years. Cecil enjoyed playing golf, going hunting and fishing, and had a great love for woodworking.
Cecil is survived by his sons, Gary Nelson of Tomball, Texas, and Cecil Erik Nelson of Havre De Grace, Md.; granddaughters, Dana and Britta Nelson; great-grandson, Cameron Reoli; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Cecil was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jane (Hayes) Nelson, on Jan. 10, 2008; sisters, Muriel Lieberson, Lulu Colliton, Emily Knipp, Vivian Tenhave and Betty Nelson; and brothers, Richard and Vernon Nelson.
The family will receive friends Sunday, Feb. 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon. Masonic services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday following the calling hours.
A funeral service celebrating the life of Cecil will be held Monday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m. at the Gay Street United Methodist, 18 N. Gay St., Mount Vernon. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery with military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
