MEDINA — Maud Majbritt Margareta (Mansén) Piar of Medina, passed away at her home in Medina on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, in the loving care of her family with the medical support of hospice.
Maud was born in Mariehamn, Åland, Finland, on July 21, 1936, and came to the United States in 1948. She was the devoted wife and partner of Glenn A. Piar for 54 years with a joint venture building their family home and other major home projects. They married on Sept. 7, 1957, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Maggie Mansén; and her oldest son, Tim A. Piar, on Oct. 16, 2010.
Maud is survived by her son, Terry A. Piar and wife, Linda, of Hinckley; her daughter, Tammy Piar of Medina; her sister, Ann Harris (brother-in-law, Gary) of California. She is the beloved grandmother of Stephen Piar (son of Tim Piar) and wife, Heather of Creston and Kathryn, Glenn, Kirk and Samantha Piar (children of Terry and Linda Piar); and uncles, aunts and cousins.
She graduated from Mount Vernon High School, class of 1956, attended Mount Vernon Business School and worked at Cooper Bessmer Co. In 1956, Maud was returning to Sweden and Åland on the Stockholm passenger line when it collided with the Italian Line, Andrea Doria off the Coast of Nantucket Island, Mass. After that accident she made several return trips to Sweden, Åland and Finland. She was a volunteer for five-plus years at Akron City General Hospital in the ’80s and at St. Francis Nursing Home in Fairlawn.
The family will receive relatives and friends Monday, Feb. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon. The rosary will be prayed following the calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, March 1, at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon with the Rev. Father Mark J. Hammond as the celebrant. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery in Mount Vernon.
Maud was a 33-year survivor of Class 4 NHL cancer, but died with cancer in remission, of PML, a rare and fatal brain disease caused by a cancer antibody drug RITUXAN.
