MARENGO — Esther E. Carter, 89, of Marengo, died Saturday, March 5, 2011, at her residence surrounded by her family.

She was born March 4, 1922, in West Jefferson to the late William and Glennie (Winegardner) Temple. She was a retired cook for Otterbein College. Esther was an avid bingo player and enjoyed a good game of poker. A self-sufficient lady she made strawberry freezer jam, homemade beef and noodles, homemade bread and cakes.

Survived by son, Butch (Carolyn) of Newark, Bruce (Carol) of Castlebury, Fla., Jerry and Jeffry (Mary), both of Marengo; 30 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sister, Shirley Peterman.

Preceded in death by husband, Clarence W. Carter; son, John Carter; brothers, Norman, Leonard, Cecil, Richard, Russell, Bill; sisters, Frances, Marcella, Joann, Martha, Agnes.

Friends may call Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury, where services will follow at noon. Interment will be in the Burnside Cemetery.
