SUNBURY — Betty Garee, 84, of Sunbury, died March 8, 2011, while surrounded by her family.

She was born Sept. 5, 1926, in Shadesville to the late Melvin and Thelma (Rawlins) Sherman. A graduate of Harlem High School in 1944, she was a lifelong area resident. Betty married Paul J. Garee on Nov. 7, 1944, three days prior to his deployment with his U.S. Marine Company to serve in the South Pacific during World War II. During the war years, she worked for Kilgore Manufacturing, assembling hand grenades.

She is survived by son, John M. Garee of Croton; three grandchildren; brothers, Charles Sherman of Sunbury, Harry Sherman of Washington, and a host of friends including Penny and Jon Dotson.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Paula; brothers, Lynn and Melvin.

Friends may call Thursday, 6-8 p.m., at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury. Graveside service Friday at 10 a.m. in Trenton Cemetery.
