CARROLLTON — John B. “Jack” Dawson, 82, of Carrollton, passed away Saturday evening, March 12, 2011, at the Carroll Healthcare Center after a brief illness.
A son of the late William Carl Dawson and Irene Shaw Dawson, he was born at Mercy Hospital in Canton on Sept. 23, 1928. He was a mechanic and auto body shop worker by trade. He was a member of the Carrollton First United Methodist Church and attended Carrollton High School until his senior year when he enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy from June 13, 1946, until he was honorably discharged on April 14, 1948. Jack was an avid NASCAR fan. He was also a big fan of Harness Racing, the Carrollton Warriors and Ohio State.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ellen McCartney, whom he married March 26, 1952; a son, Michael (Sheryl) Dawson of Canton; a daughter, Marcie (John) Fowler of Mount Vernon; two grandsons, Chad Michal of Strongsville and Carey Dawson of Canton; two granddaughters, Valerie (Zach) Burrell of Howard and Amanda (Darin) Nicholls of Canton; two great-grandsons, Jacob and Isaac Burrell of Howard; many nieces and nephews; and Donald Pete Slates, his best friend whom he considered a giant of a man.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William of Tennessee and W. Robert of Arizona.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 16, at 11 a.m. in Sweeney-Dodds Funeral Home with the Rev. Kimberly Arbaugh officiating. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery in Carrollton. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
