MOUNT VERNON — Mildred H. “Millie” Poland, 74, of Mount Vernon, passed away unexpectedly March 12, 2011, at The Ohio State University Medical Center with her family by her side.
She was born Aug. 19, 1936, in Newark to the late Lester F. and Mary M. (Chidester) Hiles. Millie and her late husband “Waddy” owned and operated The Gallery, Waddy’s Kasual Corner and Brinning’s News/Vine Deli. She was a member of VFW Post 4027, a past member of the Chamber of Commerce, Women of the Elks, a past president for The Woman in Business and a former director for the United Way. She was a 1954 graduate and valedictorian of Utica High School. Millie enjoyed watching her kids and grandchildren play various sports through the years, gardening, golf and camping.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kris (Paul) Caldwell of Fredericktown; a son and daughter-in-law, Stuart (Jeanne) Poland of Mount Vernon; three sisters, Barbara (John) Rodeniser of Utica, Garnet Davis of Utica and Mary Barber of Mount Vernon; a brother, Charles (Pat) Hiles of Portland, Ore.; grandchildren, Kami Weikel, Kodi Weikel, Trey Caldwell and Casey Poland; stepgrandchildren, Josh and Ben Corrigan, Yardley El-Khouri; and many nieces and nephews.
Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Rollo E. “Waddy” Poland, in August of 2010; and a brother, Butch Hiles.
Friends may call Thursday, March 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home, 212 N. Main St., Mount Vernon, where a memorial service will follow at 8 p.m. with Pastor Jonathan Fettig officiating. Private burial will take place in Mound View Cemetery.
