MANSFIELD — James C. Meek, 90, passed away Friday, March 18, 2011, in Crestwood Care Center following an extended illness.
James was born Nov. 30, 1920, in Wayne to Myron and Nellie (Stannard) Meek, and served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving as a first lieutenant under General Patton, seeing action in the Battle of the Bulge. He rose through the ranks of the Fostoria Police Department, and served as police chief for 28 years. He taught criminology at North Central State College.
Survived by his wife, Betty L. (Harris) Meek; daughter, Michelle (James) Grandstaff; son, Michael Meek; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Ione Ward; and sister-in-law, Virginia Meek.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Donald Meek and Richard Meek.
