MOUNT VERNON — Charles H. Smith, 87, of Mount Vernon, died Saturday evening, April 2, 2011, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Juanita near Howard.

He was born April 21, 1923, in Steuben, Ohio, son of the late Dan and Martha (Coleman) Smith. Charles retired in 1983 with 37 years of service from the F.J. Egner and Son Trucking at the Canton Terminal. Charles was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, the Canton Motorcycle Club, the UltraVan R.V. Club, the American Legion in Mount Vernon and the Teamsters Local 92 in Canton.

Charles is survived by his wife of over 69 years, Helen (Beatty) Smith; sons, Dan (Judy) Smith of Mount Vernon, Dave (Juanita) Smith of Howard and Chuck (Kathy) Smith of Fredericktown; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Dale Smith of Kansas.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, where a funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 6, at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Fred Shoemaker officiating. Burial will follow in Skeen Cemetery in Academia with military honors provided by the Knox County Veterans Council.
