POWELL — Harold “Hal” Martin, 69, of Powell, went home with the angels Friday evening, April 1, 2011, at Riverside Hospital surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 17, 1941, in Ashley, son of the late Carl and Lois (Ward) Martin. Hal grew up in the Village of Ashley. He attended Elm Valley School and was an all-around athlete. He was also a member of Stantontown Advent Christian Church. He was a barber in Delaware for a few years and then went on to selling automobiles for 30 years thereafter in various dealerships such as Tynes Chevrolet, Carriage Town and Plaza Pontiac. In his younger years, Hal loved to hunt, but when his faithful Black Lab Toby passed on, he lost the thrill for hunting. Hal coached and played basketball for Delaware City Recreation for a number of years, but his love of a game was golf. He was an avid golfer and participated in many tournaments in and around Delaware. He was employed at Table Rock Golf Club (his favorite place to golf) and worked there with his good friend Jim Butler until he retired. He also loved fishing at Lake Erie for walleye. Hal also loved the Little Brown Jug and attended every race from 1946 to 2010. His father, Carl, was a harness race driver and he was the one who introduced him to the great sport of harness racing.

Hal is survived by his wife of 32 years, Carol Martin; daughters, Lisa (Pete) Button of Westerville, Diana (Rick) Neuenschwander of Cincinnati, Michelle (Dan) Kidd of Lewis Center and Angela (Dennis) Bezold of Delaware; and his son, Scott (Teresa) Martin of Delaware. Also survived by brothers, Don (Becky) Martin of Westfield, Leroy (Linda) Martin of Ashley; sister, Dalene (Keith) Daniels of Ashley; eight grandchildren, Qwin, Tim, Rachel and Sam Button, Mariah Martin, Rhian (Willem) Meintjes, Michael Creasap and Aiden VanOrder.

His father, Carl, and mother, Lois Martin, preceded him in death.

The family will receive friends Thursday, April 7, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Devore-Snyder Funeral Home, Ohio 3 and Ohio 61 in Sunbury. The funeral service will be held Friday, April 8, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Keith Daniels officiating. Burial will follow in Ashley Union Cemetery.

Hal will be missed as a husband, father, brother, grandpa, uncle and all-around good guy. He always took the time to listen to people’s problems and tried to help them through difficult times. He loved his family and we loved him right back. He will be greatly missed as a companion and friend to all.

Private condolences may be expressed to the family at In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to OhioHealth Home Reach Hospice, 3595 Olentangy River Road, Columbus, OH 43214.

The Devore-Snyder Funeral Home in Sunbury is honored to serve the family of Harold “Hal” Martin.
