MOUNT VERNON — Bettye L. Monk, 74, of Mount Vernon, passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 6, 2011, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Aug. 20, 1936, in Springfield, Tenn., daughter of the late Francis and Eunice (Arms) Taylor. Bettye was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Mount Vernon. She retired from the Knox County Department of Aging as the supervisor of the Foster Grandparent program at the Mount Vernon Developmental Center for over 30 years. Bettye had also worked that the Mohican Youth Camp, Sears Department Store and Martin Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed bowling, doing cross stitch, crocheting, collecting blue glass, bird houses and Longaberger baskets.
Bettye is survived by her daughters, Carmen (Henry) Allen and Linda (Greg Blubaugh) Green of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Lianna Monk, Kyle Theibert, Amy Theibert, Kristi Allen, Christopher Blubaugh and Travis Blubaugh; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Laverne Riggins of Clarksville, Tenn., and Linda Slatten of Carriere, Miss.; and her closest friend, Betty Stricker of Gray Tenn.
In addition to her parents, Bettye was preceded in death by her husband, Merrill “Sonny” Monk, on April 10, 1982; and a son, Mark Monk, on April 24, 1992.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of a memorial service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, with Pastor Susan Stevens officiating. A private inurnment will be held at Mound View Cemetery.
