MOUNT VERNON — Lawrence C. Simmons, 96, a lifelong resident of Mount Vernon, passed away May 12, 2011, at Country Court Nursing Center.

He was born Dec. 18, 1914, in Mount Vernon to the late Augustus Lawrence and Ella C. (Cooper) Simmons. Lawrence was a farmer and owner/operator of Simmons’s Disposal Service in Mount Vernon retiring in 1975. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Lawrence was a longtime supporter of the Knox County Fair and Agricultural Museum, and was an avid horse and cattleman.

He is survived by his daughter, Varian Wilson of Reynoldsburg; two granddaughters, Shawna Wilson of Dallas, Texas, and Penni (David) DeJarnett of Columbus; three great-granddaughters, Tiara Wilson, Savannah DeJarnett and Logan DeJarnett; a sister, Dr. Ellamae Simmons of Oakland, Calif.; and a great-great-grandson, Gary Graham Jr.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his wife, D. Isabelle Simmons; a daughter, Laureen Simmons; and sisters, Georgeanna Mitchell and Rowena Rutland.

Friends may call Monday, May 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home, 212 N. Main St., Mount Vernon. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Karl Stevens officiating. Burial will follow in Mound View Cemetery.
