FREDERICKTOWN — Lydia L. Smith, 83, of Summit Street, Fredericktown, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2011, at the Kobacker House in Columbus.

She was born Sept. 8, 1927, in Knox County to the late Lawrence Ray and Beulah (Cole) Smith. Lydia taught first and second grade in the Lexington School system for 34 years and upon retiring continued to work with young girls as a leader of a local Girl Scout Troop.

Lydia was a member of the Fredericktown United Methodist Church where she was a member of the choir and worked tirelessly serving as a Sunday school teacher, mission chairperson and an active member of the United Methodist Women at the local, district and conference level. She had also served as an active member of the Advisory Board of Church World Service for more than 20 years.

She is survived by her brother, James (Mary) Smith of Heath; nephews, Stephen Malon, Scott Smith, Glenn Smith, Randall Smith, J. Kelly Smith and Matthew Smith; nieces, Patti Pates and Ruth Riding.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Vivian Smith and Alice Malon.

A funeral service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Fredericktown United Methodist Church, 123 Columbus Road, Fredericktown, OH 43019, where friends may call one hour prior. The Rev. Keith Bohley will be officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown.
