OOLTEWAH, Tenn. — Robert E. Benge, 81, of Ooltewah, Tenn., formerly of Mount Vernon, Ohio, passed away May 14, 2011, in Collegedale, Tenn.

He was born Nov. 29, 1929, and was the son of Earl J. and Anna (Hoopes) Benge. He was a 1948 graduate of Mount Vernon Academy and retired from PPG Industries, where he was a computer operator. He served in the infantry of the U.S. Army during the Korean War and retired with 20 years of service. He was a life member of the Collegedale (Tenn.) VFW Post 1697 and a life member of the Seventh Infantry Regiment.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Marlene (Trott) Benge; a son, Robert C. (Deborah) Benge of Ooltewah, Tenn.; a daughter, Susan Benge of Mount Vernon, Ohio; grandsons, Robert H. and Kyle Benge, both of Ooltewah, Tenn.; a sister, Dorothy (Henrik) Larsen of Jacksonville, Ark.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Myrtle (Bradford) Proud.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens on Monday, May 23, at 10:30 a.m. Elder Russell Lucht will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Vernon Academy Student Aid Fund, Mount Vernon, OH; or the charity of your choice. Assistance with arrangements was provided by Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Chattanooga, Tenn.
