MANSFIELD — John E. Lakkola, 71, of Mansfield passed away May 30, 2011.

John was born July 4, 1939, in Cleveland to John Elmer and Wilma (Pekar) Lakkola. John worked for General Motors as a tool and die maker, beginning his career in Elyria and being transferred to the Mansfield shop in 1989. He retired from GM three years ago with 34 years of service. John served in the Army National Guard. On Oct. 30, 1971, he married LaVerne “Bernie” Wamsley, with whom he celebrated nearly 40 years marriage.

Surviving are his wife, LaVerne Lakkola; a sister, Shirley (“Pete”) Sardiga; two nephews, Nick and Paul Sardiga; and countless friends.

Friends may call Thursday, 4-7 p.m., in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. A brief military committal service will follow with military honors conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Private interment in Mansfield Cemetery.
