FREDERICKTOWN — Howard N. Phillips, 81, of Fredericktown, died Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at the Country Club Retirement Campus in Mount Vernon.

Howard was born Jan. 31, 1930, in Fredericktown to John R. Phillips Sr. and Naomi R. (Smith) Phillips. He was a graduate of Fredericktown High School and had been a farmer in the Fredericktown area his entire lifetime.

He was a faithful member of the Green Valley United Methodist Church; was a member of the Fredericktown Fire District Board of Directors, and had been a 4-H advisor for over 20 years. Howard was a member of the Ohio Guernsey Breeders Association, where he served as chairman of the Junior Committee and chaired youth boards and the dairy service unit. In the early 1960s, Howard was honored as Knox County’s “Outstanding Young Farmer.”

Surviving are his children, Karen Davis of Leesburg and Scott Phillips of Fredericktown; grandchildren, Chris (Kerry) Phillips of Fredericktown, Eryn (Sam) Fawcett of Gambier, Brady (Erica) Phillips of Powell, Jason (Tara) Davis of Hillsboro and Brenda Davis of Cincinnati; eight great-grandchildren; and his sister, Ruth E. Coulter of Fort Myers, Fla.

Besides his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Lavilla “Billie” Phillips, in 2006; a grandson, Brian Davis; his brother, John R. Phillips Jr.; and his son-in-law, Philip Davis.

Friends may call Sunday, July 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, 33 E. College St., Fredericktown, where funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gerald Bell officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown.
