MOUNT VERNON — Robert E. Metz, 78, of Mount Vernon, passed away Wednesday afternoon, July 6, 2011, at the home of his daughter near Mount Vernon surrounded by his loving family.

He was born June 21, 1933, in Columbus, a son of the late Lester and Mabel (Kinser) Metz. Robert retired from Custer Heating and Cooling in Columbus. He was honorably discharged in 1950 from the U.S. Air Force and was a Life member of the AMVETS Post 9 and the Disabled American Veterans. Robert was also a member of the Colonial City Moose Lodge, was an avid Harley Davidson rider, and a member of the American Motorcycle Association. He enjoyed tinkering in his wood shed and was a great pool player.

Robert is survived by his loving daughters, Debbie and Chrystal Metz; son, J.T.; son-in-law, Dave Diamond Jr.; “brother,” Marvin Eugene Metz; niece, Barb Shepard; granddaughters, Taylor and Abbey Diamond; adopted son, Larry Devlin; longtime friends, acquaintances, and the Overly family; and his loyal K-9 companion, Rudy.

Heartfelt thanks go out to special friends Dicky Wren, Shirley Parker, Floyd Deyo and Hospice of Knox County.

A funeral procession led by Harley Davidson Motorcycles will form at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High St., Mount Vernon, between 9:30 and 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 12. A graveside funeral service will follow in Friendship Cemetery near Mount Vernon. Military honors will be provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council.
