MOUNT VERNON — Melvin Ray Baughman, 85, of Mount Vernon, passed away Friday, July 8, 2011, at the Country Club Retirement Campus in Mount Vernon, surrounded by his family.
Melvin was born June 18, 1926, in Chandlersville, a son of the late Ray and Zoe Morrison Baughman. He was a graduate of Chandlersville High School, where he played basketball and was in the band. He showed black angus cattle at the Muskingum County Fair and the Ohio State Fair. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1944-1946. He was a lifetime member of the Gage and Gavel Masonic Lodge 448, Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio.
Melvin served as an Ohio State Highway Patrolman for 12 years. He also served as a Knox County Deputy Sheriff and retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 20 years. He and his family raised Suffolk sheep, selling lambs to many 4-H members. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Mount Vernon.
Melvin is survived by his wife and best friend of 61 years, Betty (Brill) Baughman. His children are Beth (Charles) Johnson, Janice (Charles) Diebold, Jeff Baughman, Sue (Jim) Koenig and Jim (Laura) Baughman. His grandchildren are Carrie (Benjamin) Loop, Ericka Johnson, Jennifer Johnson, Greg (Krystin) Diebold, Ashley Diebold, Chad Baughman and Sarah Baughman. His great-grandchildren are Caroline, Joe and Jack Loop.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Hugh Baughman; and sisters, Katherine (Baughman) McCutcheon and Eileen (Baughman) Moore.
Friends may call Tuesday, July 12, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Mock-Miller Funeral Home, 63 W. Main St., New Concord. Services will be held Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Susan Stevens officiating. Burial will be in Salt Creek Cemetery, near Rix Mills.
